What causes age spots and pigmentation.
There are different types of pigmentation, the common ones being melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and can develop during pregnancy or hormonal fluctuations. Most commonly Melasma appears across the nose and cheeks in the shape of a butterfly.
The hyperpigmentation is a direct result of an increased level of hormone in your body which results in increased melanin.
We do not treat Melasma with LIMELIGHT but we do have other treatments to tackle this concern (eg. IMAGE Lightening Lift Peels and Laser Genesis).
Sunspots, or liver spots, or solar lentigines, are very common. They appear when the melanocytes (pigment producing cells) start to permanently produce pigment due to the damage caused by repeated sun exposure that builds up over time.
Generally, they appear as spots on areas most commonly exposed to the sun, like the hands, face and chest.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a result of injury or inflammation to the skin. A common cause of this is acne.

How does a limelight treatment work?
Depending on your concerns, treatment can be customised to treat just 1 or all 3 of the following concerns:
Age spots / pigmentation
The laser energy is absorbed by the melanin (brown pigment) in the affected area and this de-natures the pigmented cells.
Successfully treated areas will darken and then flake off as the skin goes through its natural shedding process. Usually within 10 days.
Facial Redness
Using non-invasive laser energy, LIMELIGHT heats the blood in the tiny blood vessels causing them to coagulate. Your body then sees the targeted vein as a foreign “object” and your immune system will then break down and absorb the vein, leaving little or no trace of the original lesion.
Immediately after treatment, the vein will either disappear or go darker until it’s reabsorbed.
Improving skin tone & firming
The laser energy stimulates the natural healing process in the skin encouraging additional collagen production . This provides a light overall skin firming & toning effect.
